RETORNA April and May activities

Spring has been a vibrant period for the RETORNA network! Over April and May, our Doctoral Candidates have been actively engaging in international conferences, public outreach, training opportunities, and secondments across Europe and beyond.
From sharing research and connecting with patients to building new collaborations and exploring future career paths, these months highlight the energy, growth, and impact of our Consortium as we move closer to the final stages of the programme.

Below you can find a list of the main activities carried out in April and May 2026.

🌟 Public engagement activities

University College Cork

Between the end of March and end of April 2026, Claire (DC7) organized and conducted five Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) sessions with participants from Ireland, Germany and Spain. These sessions were carried out in close collaboration with our associated partners: Retina International (Ireland), ProRetina (Germany) and FARPE (Spain).
The main objective of these sessions was to co-design a survey with patients and for patients, ensuring that their perspectives, needs, and priorities are fully reflected in the study design
These activities served a dual purpose. On one hand, they represented valuable public engagement opportunities, where Claire presented her research and explained its goals directly to patients. On the other hand, they were a key step in the Patient and Public Involvement process, contributing to the development of a survey that will later be distributed as part of the Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) study.

Fondazione Telethon

The workshop “Patients and Physicians together towards the cure of Retinitis Pigmentosa” took place on 16 May 2026 in Naples in a hybrid format, hosted by our associated partner University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”.
As part of the annual Convegno Retina Italia, the event brought together patients, clinicians, and researchers to discuss recent advances in inherited retinal diseases, with a focus on diagnosis and therapy. Prof. Sandro Banfi from our beneficiary Fondazione Telethon ETS presented new findings on genes associated with these conditions.
With over 100 onsite participants and around 200 online attendees, the activity successfully raised awareness, improved understanding of IRDs, and strengthened collaboration between patients, clinicians, and researchers, fostering trust and engagement with biomedical research.
The recording of the event can be accessed here.

🌟 Dissemination and communication activities

For the second year Claire participated in the annual Cork University Business School (CUBS) Postgraduate Research Symposium at University College Cork that took place on the 21st of May 2026.

She presented her research entitled “Patient preferences for retinal gene therapy: A discrete choice experiment (DCE)”.

The symposium brought together PhD researchers, academics, and students to showcase innovative research across a wide range of disciplines. Claire’s work contributed to discussions on patient-centred approaches in retinal therapies, highlighting the importance of incorporating patient preferences into the development and assessment of gene therapies.

🌟 Preparing the next career step

As our Doctoral Candidates approach the final months of their PhD contracts, they are also actively exploring the next steps in their careers. Building professional networks remains a key strategy in shaping these future paths, something that has been strongly encouraged from the very beginning of the programme—both within the consortium and through participation in international conferences and research events.

Equally important is staying informed about available career opportunities and funding schemes, just as Enola did by attending the online webinar “MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships Training” organised on the 23rd of April 2026 by the University of Primorska within the KRPAN project, gaining valuable insights into postdoctoral funding opportunities and application strategies.

🌟 Conferences

ISEV – The International Society for Extracellular Vesicles annual meeting took place in Puerto Rico from 22 to 26 April 2026.

The event brought together leading researchers, clinicians, and industry experts interested in the latest advances in extracellular vesicle (EV) science and its applications in diagnostics and therapeutics.

The conference featured a rich programme of keynote lectures, scientific sessions, and networking opportunities that our DC1 Maria Eduarda took advantage of. She could get to know better the EV community, the latests advances as well to present part of her work during the poster session on Saturday, engaging with peers and receiving valuable feedback on her work. Read her impressions on this first experience at ISEV here.

ARVO – The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology Annual Meeting took place in Denver – USA from the 3 to 7 May 2026.

The ARVO Annual Meeting in Denver brought together leading scientists and clinicians in the field of vision research to discuss the latest advances in ophthalmology, retinal diseases, and innovative therapeutic approaches.
This was the third edition in which RETORNA was represented by PhD students. During the conference, Maria- DC9 presented her research in a poster session, while Chiara DC10 actively participated in the scientific discussions and networking activities.
As in every edition, the event offered a dynamic programme of scientific sessions, fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange among international experts. Chiara and Maria attended the meeting alongside PIs Sandro Banfi, Dr. Sven Schnichels, and Dr. Zohreh Hossienzadeh, contributing to the strong presence of the team.

Claire (UCC/Cork University Business School, Ireland) Retina International, Ireland

Grateful to be undertaking a secondment with Retina International, whose mission to empower patients through advocacy, education, and research aligns closely with my own research interests.
Thank you to the team for the warm welcome, the opportunity to contribute to such impactful work, and for supporting my own research throughout the experience!

Maria Eduarda (Catholic University of Valencia, Spain) University of Tubingen, Germany

It is really nice to be back in Tübingen, especially because I can clearly see how much I have improved since my last stay here. Coming back to a familiar place made it much easier to settle in, and it has given me the chance to keep developing my skills while learning new techniques in an environment I already know. This time, I feel more confident, more prepared, and better able to make the most of the experience.

Chiara (Catholic University of Valencia, Spain) University of Colorado Anschutz, USA

Chiara is more than half way into her second long secondment at University of Colorado co-supervised by our associated partner Dr. Miguel Flores Bellver. After the first experience last year she returned in February 2026, choosing to fully dedicate herself to her professional development while staying connected with friends and family through messages and WhatsApp video calls due to the distance.
The mantra of this secondment: sacrifice, fail, succeed, repeat.
Surely an experience that has taught me to always bounce back in one way or another, that behind the figure of a paper there is always a tremendous amount of work and just as many failures, tears, and nervous breakdowns, and that all of this is more valuable than the impact factor of the journal in which it will be published. Because all of this is experience, learning, and personal growth, and this is the only way to hope to become a good scientist, or at least to try to be.

🌟 Complementary activities that improve our DCs scientific skills

DCs are curious, eager to learn, to experience, to improve…to build their best future version. They do research, support the team and say “yes” when they find themselves in front of an interesting proposal. That is the case of Enola, who was invited by her co-supervisor Dr. Lorena Vidal to join a new experience and challenge herself. Dr. Lorena Vidal has been collaborating for a long time with the journal “Actualidad en Farmacología y Terapéutica” (AFT) (Current Developments in Pharmacology and Therapeutics”, a quarterly pharmacotherapy journal of the Teófilo Hernando Foundation and the Spanish Pharmacology Foundation, endorsed by the Spanish Society of Pharmacology. The journal publishes new pharmacological advances and drugs that have come onto the markey, always written rigorously by professors and researchers.

In the nr. 24 of the journal, at page 54, Dr. Lorena Vidal (co-supervisor of our DC4 Enola) analyses Lerochol, a new treatment that could improve the colesterol LDL. With proud we want to say that Enola has seen this process closely: the analysis behind the articles, deciding the structure, the does and dont’s, learning about responsability and commitment to deliver what promised in duetime….and all that are skills that she is taking with her, for her future improved version.

For who might be interested the journal is in digital format and free, with some parts in English and others in Spanish, for which we invite you all to have a look at it.

Greetings,
RETORNA team
