ARVO facts
ARVO meeting is a well know event among vision scientists and industries!
ARVO, that stands for Association For Research In Vision And Ophthalmology, has been funded in 1928 in Washington. Since then it has never stopped supporting research worldwide, understanding the visual system and preventing, treating and curing its disorders.
Today it is represented by more than 12.000 members from more than 60 countries around the world, most of them attending every year the ARVO annual meeting.
The 2024 edition took place in Seattle, the emerald city known for its green vegetation and commitment with sustainability.
RETORNA at ARVO 2024
RETORNA was also present at ARVO 2024 with various IPs and DCs participating in this edition. While for most of the PIs this is a fix annual meeting that they never miss, for our 5 Doctoral Candidates this was the first time attending it and for some the first time in the USA.
ARVO took place from the 5th until the 9th of May 2024. Our DCs experimented 5 really intensive days full of conferences, poster presentations, round tables sessions and free time activities.
Our DCs went there both for learning from others from the same sector, meeting other scientists just like them, but also to present their own poster to the others.
Training sessions for our DCs
Except for the scientific sessions, participants could also register for sessions such as:
- Drop in mentoring: 30 minutes of mentoring on future career path
- Presentation on how to communicate research
Enola’s feedback
Had a first enriching experience at Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) this year from May 5th to 9th! And hopefully not the last one! 🌟
It was an honor to present my poster about the first results of my PhD, and gained valuable insights from researchers. The kind advice shared truly made the conference memorable.
It was also a fantastic opportunity to strengthen connections within Retorna_EU and bond over dinner. Looking forward to integrating these learnings into our ongoing projects!
Grateful to Retorna_EU for making it possible for me to attend the conference and thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of vision research 👁️.
Looking forward to applying what I’ve learned!

Ceren’s feedback
Attending ARVO 2024 as a PhD student was simply amazing! It was like stepping into a world of excitement and learning all about visual science. Hearing about the latest research and chatting with other scientists left me feeling so happy and motivated. The conference was full of energy and ideas, and it really fueled my passion for my own research. Plus, being surrounded by scientists made me feel like I was part of a big community. I’m truly grateful for the experience and excited to apply what I’ve learned to my studies!

Vaishnavi’s feedback
My first ARVO in Seattle was a very different experience compared to all other European conferences I have attended before. There was a very broad range of research topics and researchers that I got to meet and learn about. It provided the potential to expand our network horizon and establish contacts internationally.
For a budding researcher like me, there were a lot of new ideas and inputs from people who visited the poster I presented, many of which I plan on implementing.
It was my first time in the USA too and I could learn a little about their culture in the time we spent there. I am very grateful to RETORNA for the opportunity!

Maria Eduarda’s feedback
Attending the ARVO conference, from May 5-9, in Seattle for the first time was an enriching experience, and I’m grateful to the Retorna project for the opportunity to learn and discuss with several researchers worldwide. Even more, I had the privilege of sharing my latest research work entitled “miR-205-5p suppresses high glucose-induced angiogenesis in
retinal cells”. The event was well-organized, offering a diverse program featuring numerous poster and paper sessions exploring different topics and techniques.
Overall, ARVO provided an exceptional platform for learning, networking, and feeling inspired to continue
contributing to the field of vision sciences

Chiara’s feedback
The ARVO congress is certainly an event full of opportunities: in just a few days you have the possibility to meet many experts in all fields of ophthalmology.
Of course, the ARVO App is essential to find your way through all the activities that the experience offers.
Thanks to the talks, I was able to learn and be inspired by research on specific topics such as EV and new therapeutic approaches to Diabetic Retinopathy. But through the posters, I was able to discuss more directly with the researchers and ask for more precise protocols and approaches, which was very stimulating. Also, talking to so many different people in your field gives you a way to enrich yourself and start networking, which I think is crucial in research.
In conclusion, it was definitely a challenging experience, but one that offers a truly amazing chance to grow in a short period of time.
Let the adventure continue!
